Sarah Thomas Silk Taffeta Skirt
Donated by: Joyce Parton
Location: City Museum Permanent Exhibition
This rare example of mid-19th century dress was handmade by Sarah Thomas on her voyage from England to Australia in 1838. The skirt has a gathered waist so that it could be let out and worn when pregnant.
Sarah and her husband William worked for Henry Osborne at his Marshall Mount Estate when they first arrived in the country. Their descendants still live in Shellharbour today.
